The first demo was one of her famous bunnies,<br />this one titled Marvin.</center>

<br />
<br />
After the demos, the students picked their photos, and, following Rita’s instruction in the demo, created their own works with a lot of input and individual attention from Rita.

She's coming from New Hampshire and will be teaching a plein air class in both oil paint AND pastel! So if you haven't tried one of those, this would be an opportunity to have a go at the one you're not familiar with and still have an alternative that will keep you in your comfort zone. <BR>
If you're interested, we'd advise you to sign up soon, because from the emails we've exchanged with her, it sounds like she may already be bringing some of her posse with her!

Wednesday morning we drove down the driveway to let the landscapers in the front gate and found the door for the gate controller box laying on the ground and thought "It was kinda windy last night but how could ...". and then another glance revealed the 12 volt battery that powers the gate system was gone! Some knuckle head had gotten behind the gate and slinked off with the battery like ... well, like a thief in the night. So we went out and bought a new battery AND a big ol' honkin' PADLOCK!<br>
Who woulda thought you'd need that out here in the country? Well. maybe some of you might have thought it and right now are probably thinking "You big dummies, of course you need to lock your gate box!", but we probably trust in and hope for the goodness of human nature just a bit too much for our own good. So now, that stops. What a shame.<BR>
Now we'll just hope we <u>never</u> find out who stole our battery, and we'll leave you to figure out what that means, but it has something to do with the old phrase "What you don't know won't hurt somebody else". And we'll also be shopping for a game camera because on Thursday we learned that in just this few square miles there have been seven gate batteries stolen along with some actuator arms (the device that opens and closes the gate).
<P>
But the landscaping project in the back yard is progressing, slow but sure. These pictures kind of show what we started with and hopefully another week should bring us to the time for the big reveal.<br>

Robin Thornhill is coming all the way from New Hampshire just to take advantage of our spectacular views here at Painted views Ranch, but the best advantage is that in her plein air class she'll be teaching artists in either oils or pastels, your choice!

Rich Gallego is coming back from California again in 2018 to teach another plein air class here in the Texas Hill Country in that cool calm and collected style that is uniquely his. We remember when Rich was last here he commented that he "...could stay right here for two weeks and never run out of things to paint." So get yourself signed up and come enjoy the experience with us!<BR>
And by the way, his painting you see just above was done right here at Painted Views Ranch. Yeehaw!

So here we are.

Rich arrived two days early and in the evening before his class I had an opportunity to follow his process as he laid some magic on a canvas that depicted a view that I see every day from the north window of my studio.
<P>
Rich gifted us this one, and another, that will hang in our classroom.<br><I><b>Thank you, Rich. You're very generous.</b></I>

<P> <P>
The first day of his workshop was windy and cold; always a plein air painter's challenge. But our students bundled up against the elements and watched Rich do a demo painting in the morning under cover and using the house to break the winds.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbXHhumx1RKq_UWeLjaLYGUQuXaU9KhDza28Gl6hwJi_Bxn6zxadNf9NMw6SvuGGWaEoAGMTXgzMBCSCYA9pLDS-9BVPSsB8o9gE4sCxJgxl35-Lk6JXr-ZdNCUiGIkxKgJuYm5DQHv5E/s1600/1b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbXHhumx1RKq_UWeLjaLYGUQuXaU9KhDza28Gl6hwJi_Bxn6zxadNf9NMw6SvuGGWaEoAGMTXgzMBCSCYA9pLDS-9BVPSsB8o9gE4sCxJgxl35-Lk6JXr-ZdNCUiGIkxKgJuYm5DQHv5E/s320/1b.jpg" width="320" height="225" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="634" /></a></div>
<P> <P> <P>
In the afternoon the students all set up their gear and had a go at painting the surroundings of our koi pond.
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguh0ZQ0ue08UaoZWtMOzSORaJPoe7ZC6L0Xi_qjnll45yJrovRn9Z3wGPJ5WfN6xPfnAa4CxxY0zma7-XzDE6jcwhYUsmkbq6mV3GaukRWUoY9TmudKEFNrI7lpziOGgMUbwtge9s7H7Y/s1600/2a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguh0ZQ0ue08UaoZWtMOzSORaJPoe7ZC6L0Xi_qjnll45yJrovRn9Z3wGPJ5WfN6xPfnAa4CxxY0zma7-XzDE6jcwhYUsmkbq6mV3GaukRWUoY9TmudKEFNrI7lpziOGgMUbwtge9s7H7Y/s320/2a.jpg" width="320" height="213" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="599" /></a></div>
<P> <P> <P>The second day was a better day with less wind, so everyone ventured down to the cattle pasture with quite different views, and after a demo from Rich, ...
<P> <P> <P>
... dove into creating images of the spreading oak trees that had a hillside to the west behind them.

<P> <P>
The last day of the workshop started out a little cool but it finally matured into a beautiful day. Students scattered out across the very top part of the pasture among the cedars trees and in every direction they looked there was something different to paint.
<P><br>
After lunch, Rich started the afternoon with a demo on cloud painting, before everyone resumed working on their second piece for the day.
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTTpdyj7f36WlC6zjJi89thvwl6RMsR-GJuaeeo_TwlzwtFPQ5mAQ1RA3MW00L5jYFVl1I7acg6Lz8KObL0fxpHIj5By6nr2um4xyFP6rismz9f9hhFgNlrkQUEZ9BemVmkQP3q5FiPLg/s1600/3d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTTpdyj7f36WlC6zjJi89thvwl6RMsR-GJuaeeo_TwlzwtFPQ5mAQ1RA3MW00L5jYFVl1I7acg6Lz8KObL0fxpHIj5By6nr2um4xyFP6rismz9f9hhFgNlrkQUEZ9BemVmkQP3q5FiPLg/s320/3d.jpg" width="306" height="320" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="942" /></a></div>
Throughout the three days, it didn't seem to matter if a student was a beginner or perhaps a little more advanced, because with Rich's teaching style of combining just the right amounts of challenge and encouragement for each student, we're pretty sure that everyone went home with something they could use as they travel further on the journey along their "art path".
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNlBQ_5nUliBpCGqB6axbIDC6o-GUEPGL7ZWNb18_whypLyRblYR3QRCE5b8Ey8vKY6vG8BBI1HSRRjSef3qfmV-mc2LtAD87tvX1cg6PR-bRX3sAyyrV7CLgfYiWxYGEHQvs1FvmlUCI/s1600/RGclass.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNlBQ_5nUliBpCGqB6axbIDC6o-GUEPGL7ZWNb18_whypLyRblYR3QRCE5b8Ey8vKY6vG8BBI1HSRRjSef3qfmV-mc2LtAD87tvX1cg6PR-bRX3sAyyrV7CLgfYiWxYGEHQvs1FvmlUCI/s400/RGclass.jpg" width="400" height="196" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="441" /></a></div>
Good job that, because Rich has already told us that he'd like to come back next fall, so if you haven't already, be sure to subscribe your email address at the top of the column on the right so you can be notified when we set the dates.

We should also tell you that Rich made a couple of interesting comments while he was here.<br>
<b><I>"I could stay here for two weeks and still not run out of things to paint."</I></b><br>
...and...<br>
<b><I>"If I lived here, I would never get anything done but walk around looking at scenery."</I></b>
That tells us something about our ranch. I'm not sure what, but ... something.<BR>
It might explain what's behind the PVR motto that's at the bottom of the <a href="http://www.paintedviewsranch.com/aboutus.html" target="about">"About Us" page</a> on our website

Last weekend we had our first workshop with Qiang Huang.
<P>
<P> Friday morning started off chilly, drizzly and damp. but Qiang did a demo under the cover of our (rapidly becoming) famous breezeway, with 10 very attentive students ....

Then in the afternoon, as the weather cleared off a bit, our 10 students set up their gear in three different spots, all under cover, and got to work. It was amazing to see how differently 10 students can interpret the same view.

On Saturday, Qiang started the day in our classroom with a digital slideshow presentation on the principles of landscape painting. Then the class moved outside to the other end of the breezeway facing east, as Qiang did another demo painting of our koi pond with it's many lilypads, while using his umbrella to keep the morning sun glare off his painting.

Artist MC searches the internet for art workshops in central Texas and discovers that Artist QH will be teaching at Painted Views Ranch. Artist MC tells artist AP about the ranch and Artist AP contacts us. "How did you ever hear about us?" we ask. "From Artist MC, who said I should come teach there. And by the way, you should contact her because she's in a group of plein air painters in your area." We contact Artist MC who says "Our group is always looking for new places to paint outdoors." And the rest is now history because we had a great group of painters here this past Saturday. And two of them will be taking a Workshop with Qiang Huang here on Sept 29th through October 1st.

She started each of the three days with a demo and then the students set to work, and it was amazing to see over the three days all the different results that came from each of the 13 artists, even though they had all watched the same demos. <br>
Rascal our ranch foreman, with his winning personality, quickly became the darling of the classroom, but when all the students were focused at theIr easels, he knew he could finally relax and just be a good protector.

Unfortunately, this was the weekend that Hurricane Harvey became The Terror of Texas and sadly for us, a few of our class members decided they needed to drop out.

But if you weren't here for this workshop, we want you to know that Judy has already told us that she would like to do another one here next year, so subscribe your email address to the top of the column at the right so you can get notified as soon as we set the dates.
<p>
And as for poor old Rascal, as we packed up the classroom on Monday after Judy left, he came in expecting another day of rollicking good fun, but just couldn't seem to understand why all of his new friends weren't coming back.

Unfortunately the combination of using a pump which turned out not to be the best for our needs, having our wet-vacuum kinda sorta fail during the process and suffering a personal injury in the afternoon of our first day, spun the whole process out longer than we had anticipated.
<P>
The primary concern was minimizing the time the fish would be in a holding tank on the shaded patio, and getting the refill started so we could return the fish to the pond.
<P>
But we started with what we thought would be the hardest part of the project, the bog, which put us behind schedule right from the start. When we realized how much time we were losing, we skipped over that and began pumping out the main pond. Even though most of the water was out, everything was going along just swimmingly, but in the middle of the afternoon, the new pump we had purchased became a problem when the water level was really low. Our backup pump worked better but kept clogging with algae and we had to keep stopping to clear it. That put us even further behind schedule, which meant the fish spent the night in the holding tank. Sure glad we invested in an aerator to keep it oxygenated.
<P>
So on the second day we had to shade the holding tank from the <u>morning</u> sun as we continued cleaning the main pond. Once that was done we started refilling but we couldn't put the fish back because of a heat wave that would have heated the small amount of water too quickly for the fish to survive. So they had to spend a second night in the tank.
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid1OCIuwalpSNax8ljOSbwcNowXK5MFxb1cijDq2WwP8aoxmlXgLrl5d281NrnEyYpDzF_S3XleoEYgAXhNdkItSrikbOi9-8I2HHB6TJSKGxW2mJt_UKSxSS3ctjCA3SLtlisAsDBhpE/s1600/IMG_0588.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid1OCIuwalpSNax8ljOSbwcNowXK5MFxb1cijDq2WwP8aoxmlXgLrl5d281NrnEyYpDzF_S3XleoEYgAXhNdkItSrikbOi9-8I2HHB6TJSKGxW2mJt_UKSxSS3ctjCA3SLtlisAsDBhpE/s320/IMG_0588.JPG" width="320" height="221" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="622" /></a></div>
<P>
<center>But eventually it all worked out and of the 57 fish that came out of the pond, 56 went back in. </center>
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCh1nytO8Zc0vLLl84_yOMNQIT7ucu75dU_wIk3mwQNikAFBUsa3cNmLNWk4ueuZN934JhwaU-pTaJKRejQOmgNUsYTPAg-YIzALN-TBaE-QBAj11JEdgiNXCeKcgLe9-_JbhA0loZx5I/s1600/IMG_0626.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCh1nytO8Zc0vLLl84_yOMNQIT7ucu75dU_wIk3mwQNikAFBUsa3cNmLNWk4ueuZN934JhwaU-pTaJKRejQOmgNUsYTPAg-YIzALN-TBaE-QBAj11JEdgiNXCeKcgLe9-_JbhA0loZx5I/s320/IMG_0626.JPG" width="320" height="240" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="675" /></a></div>
<P>
Then we tackled the bog again. It was as difficult as we had anticipated but some of that was due to things we found that we hadn't anticipated. We corrected those problems so we won't have to deal with them again next year.
<P>
Rocki did yeoman service working like a trooper as she took charge of the bog by removing much of the gravel and washing it while I disassembled all the components that make the bog work, cleaning out the space and getting it all reassembled, so she could return the gravel.

All things considered, it <u>was</u> a big job, it was a learning experience <i>(we're already planning to do some things differently next year)</i> and it was a big cost savings to do it ourselves. Anyway, a good time was had by all, including Rascal the Ranch Foreman and his first assistant Sweetie, who seemed to enjoy hanging out in "her fort" in the shade under the John Deere.

... we've been having just enough rains to encourage the wildflowers to "volunteer" around the pond berm and the verbena and coneflowers are making things look like a garden in a Monet painting. The yucca that we transplanted last year has bloomed and moved into the stage of making seed pods. We're watching those so that we can gather the seeds to make more yuccas in the future because it's way easier than digging them up.<br>
Unfortunately the rains are also encouraging the thistles and other weeds so there is always something to work on. <P>

That would include getting things ready for our upcoming workshops.
<P>
One of the things that we will have to do every year is clean the koi pond. So we've been getting ready for that task in order to make it happen in early June. We've purchased a larger pump (than we've ever had) and a hose for emptying all the water from the pond, and a water trough for holding the koi while the pond is being cleaned.

Did a bit of a test with the new pump this past week and it should work out just fine. In fact, at 3,566 gallons per hour this thing is A BEAST! It'll probably empty most of the pond in about 3 to 4 hours.

After living here almost three years now we've learned from experience that unless the likelihood of rain is predicted at greater than a 50% chance, the likelihood here at Painted Views Ranch is that we won't be getting any rain.<br>
And then last Saturday was a day when the temperatures plummetted down into the 40's and never got much above 60 all day. I know that's not much of a hardship but it was a shock after all the nice weather we've been having recently.<br>
But, when I was taking a break from the landscaping projects I've been working on, I was out and about taking some springtime photos here on the ranch this week. You'll find some of them below.
<P>
But first I just want to say that there are still some openings in our art workshops for this year, so if you're an artist looking for instruction, please review the workshops on our website, check out the style of each instructor's work, (there's a lot of variety so it should be easy to find someone that you'd like to learn from) and get yourself signed up for one of them.

Just a fancy way of saying "outdoors". And in recent years, painting outdoors seems to be growing exponentially in its popularity among US artists. Even though I'm not a plein air artist myself, I've often thought the sights here at Painted Views Ranch would lend themselves quite well to all the plein air excitement among artists. Which is why we have a schedule for teaching artists to sign up to teach workshops in painting here at the ranch.
<P>
This past Saturday, two members from a group known as <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Plein-Air-Austin-461996873847951/" target="PAAustin">Plein Air Austin</a> were here painting as a sort of "test drive" for our Ranch being a venue for one of the group's future painting outings. The good news is that Lori and Juanita seemed to have a little trouble deciding which of the many vistas here to choose as their "Painting of the Day". After scouting around a bit they decided on a shady spot, protected from a gentle breeze looking in a southwesterly direction that had some of our persimmon trees and about a five mile horizon in the view.
Then they set up their gear, got after it with an air of determination, turned out a couple of good ones and even made it look easy in the process.

<br />
We had a few plein air painters scheduled to come do some painting here last Saturday but the weather didn't cooperate, so they're scheduled again for next Saturday. All things considered, it probably worked out for the better, because during this past week, with the rains we've had, many of the persimmon trees are starting to leaf out with a very lovely shade of yellowish green, making a nice contrast to the dark greens of the cedars. And with having had the spring time change, next Saturday should be better for lighting in the morning, if the painters are here early enough.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlgShmhNJgpmWWBea91NpKpZfOkAPgV9D4X0d04wHLLgC-Msw11Hy4eoO2SZK8pkejx3CY98lH2wYHKUBcRXLJTQiOiYs39h7qPayhz3k5C77rDk3Z4pvOHrD-Rc7oeOucJ6kIeygrGsI/s1600/IMG_0335.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlgShmhNJgpmWWBea91NpKpZfOkAPgV9D4X0d04wHLLgC-Msw11Hy4eoO2SZK8pkejx3CY98lH2wYHKUBcRXLJTQiOiYs39h7qPayhz3k5C77rDk3Z4pvOHrD-Rc7oeOucJ6kIeygrGsI/s320/IMG_0335.jpg" width="320" height="136" /></a></div>
<P>
During, the week, some of our "neighbors" stopped by, with their kids, and we had a nice chat over the fence, right out side of my north-facing studio windows.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiHueCA6b8VzRkNqxjrIN0bYOmjLLdCxaLSTaFZ3R83HXh6iSJ5b_U7eHlxRAg2CH-LLqEeDD3dOv-qZExvuzkRJaL7uIxVMWiQN_Q210nvmXU6QWSlGkUWls416W5FEA-Fr8xGcZDD7w/s1600/IMG_0323.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiHueCA6b8VzRkNqxjrIN0bYOmjLLdCxaLSTaFZ3R83HXh6iSJ5b_U7eHlxRAg2CH-LLqEeDD3dOv-qZExvuzkRJaL7uIxVMWiQN_Q210nvmXU6QWSlGkUWls416W5FEA-Fr8xGcZDD7w/s320/IMG_0323.JPG" width="320" height="245" /></a></div>
<P>
But then the herding instinct kicked in for Rascal, our Ranch Foreman, and his First-Assistant Sweetie, and they decided it was time for the cattle to go and informed them of that point, in no uncertain terms.

As I watched them recently I got the impression of looking into a kaleidoscope made of fish! It will be interesting to see if visiting artists will try to "impressionistically" capture a scene like this.

Projects here have moved along in fits and starts during the past year, but the big news is that the koi pond was finally finished! A year and a half in the making but it's looking great. We are adding more plantings around it as time and weather allow but we expect to have it in good shape by spring and then the backyard landscape project should be proceeding.
<P>
And now that we've moved into 2017, we have a new website. Make a visit to <a href="http://www.paintedviewsranch.com" target=pvr>PaintedViewsRanch.com</a> for more info and photos.<BR><BR><BR>

Now for the <B><U>REALLY BIG NEWS!!!</u></B><br>
We already have TWO artists committed to teach Workshops here in 2017!<BR>
Qiang Huang and David Forks will be teaching plein air painting during this year.<BR>
If you're interested in taking a class with us, the website will give you details on all the upcoming classes.

Unfortunately, after a year and a half of planning to hold workshops at Painted Views Ranch and months leading up to this one in particular, we were "blessed" with rainy weather on all three days as we hosted our first workshop. But even though there was only one chance for an outdoor session, (up on the hilltop, close to the classroom in case a hasty retreat might be needed) Becky Joy did an amazing job of filling the hours indoors with valuable information for all of our students. Becky's strategies for color mixing and plenty of practice with getting tonal values just right, made for a very beneficial and highly educational experience for all our attendees.

Becky told us it would not take much to get her back again, so with her and three other artists who have already expressed an interest in teaching here, 2016 should present great opportunities for artists to hone their skills. <B>Ann Hoffpauir</B> is a full-time artist from Orange, Texas who paints in a realistic style. Her superb paintings, done in different mediums, reflect a wide range of subjects. She knows when she has hit the mark when there’s a balance between moods, look and feel.
<P>
Her painting style blends with a love of nature and its forms, with brilliant lights and strong darks and she wants to teach you the effect light has on form in unique situations whether it’s striking an object, fleeting or spilling over it.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0GL8oJgzvkE5YQoCf6jqalTM6XhUPYvGA-OP-g3uHsxtrG9OEwSY5mdCAZXeoR3m4934IvR2hOuU8SjBXMv9ES6ZfmGItpfCz7Nrwc3gjUzfeIOJ6v8ze6DpLvPsEACus4qY0Q0vNWq4/s1600/hofpauir+ex.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0GL8oJgzvkE5YQoCf6jqalTM6XhUPYvGA-OP-g3uHsxtrG9OEwSY5mdCAZXeoR3m4934IvR2hOuU8SjBXMv9ES6ZfmGItpfCz7Nrwc3gjUzfeIOJ6v8ze6DpLvPsEACus4qY0Q0vNWq4/s320/hofpauir+ex.jpg" /></a></div>
Although she works in many mediums, in this workshop Ann will be teaching watercolors, because she finds the spontaneous qualities of watercolors lend themselves very well to a fresh painterly approach, allowing the painting as a whole to engage the viewer as it conveys a sense of mystery and beauty.
<P>
Ann believes the process of educating one’s self is never ending. She has taught at many local organizations and private schools and conducts several workshops a year along with regular weekly classes taught at her home studio in Orange.<BR>
Ms. Hoffpauir has won many awards over the years at local, state and out of state shows and has been featured in Southwest Art magazine, Visual Language online magazine and Western Art Collector’s – Art of the Horse.

Barbara Haviland will be teaching a three day workshop on<br>
<HR color=470000><center><b>Thursday, Friday and Saturday,<br>October 8th, 9th and 10th, 2015.</b></center><HR color=470000>
<P>This will be a workshop devoted to <b>still life painting</b>.
<p>
Barbara Haviland has been creating fine art for most of her life. She is an accomplished artist, painting mostly in oils, in bold rich colors that express her enthusiasm for painting. She is mostly self-taught but has enjoyed many workshops with nationally known artists.
<P>
Barbara makes her own worlds with her favorite tools: a brush and now a palette knife. Barbara says <I>"It is like reading a book: I can go anywhere. I get so absorbed with my creating that time passes and is gone before I know it. I am very passionate with my art. My favorite subjects are Florals and Bayou paintings, I will paint all subjects and am never bored."</i>
<P>
Barbara Haviland has been actively giving of her talents and time to Associated Louisiana Artists /Gallery By the Lake in Lake Charles, LA. as board member and current co-treasurer. She is a member of Port Arthur and Nederland Art leagues, Texas Artists Museum and Outdoor Painters Society. Barbara is actively involved with several groups online, including Artists of Texas which gives her great joy. She is also a member of Oil Painters of America.
<P>

Barbara has been teaching still life painting for the past 10 years from her studio in Groves, TX, on the eastern edge of the state. Because this is the first time she will be available to teach a workshop in central Texas, and with the introductory price of only <b>$350</b>, we expect the class to fill up quickly.

The percentages of rain possibility for the next week don't exceed a 50% chance and experience tells us that may mean we won't get any rain this week and perhaps things can start to dry out a little.
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibuFKfM5v3rNNDbP-nbw9RonwIDcvQLLjjjpicBHGEuF1gtTXfiNSrfZhf2ITXg3yWjO8ni61M0AiPGGlPf9t-a-BZv0YRhT-vpmNIn8p4QKipTK_Oh7_UuX9jA2XoOEaCGT4BsUTU418/s1600/IMG_1310.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibuFKfM5v3rNNDbP-nbw9RonwIDcvQLLjjjpicBHGEuF1gtTXfiNSrfZhf2ITXg3yWjO8ni61M0AiPGGlPf9t-a-BZv0YRhT-vpmNIn8p4QKipTK_Oh7_UuX9jA2XoOEaCGT4BsUTU418/s320/IMG_1310.jpg" /></a></div>
The rains we've had in the past several months have really hampered progress on our projects. The koi pond site has been unworkable for at least the last three weeks. The excavation is holding water even without a rubber liner, just the underpadding, so that tells us the ground is saturated. The "pond" will have to be pumped out before the liner can go in. Then the rocks could go on the rock ledges that have been created in the pond, but the backyard is a sea of mud so bringing the rocks across it is just about impossible until the yard firms up a bit.
<P>
It's been too wet to mow the new grass in the front yard and it's so high now that it's become irresistible to the cattle that allow us to have an agricultural tax exemption on most of our property. Found hoof prints in a large part of the front yard this morning because the ground is so soft the hooves sink right in. Obviously it's time for some fencing and probably a cattle guard, but good luck finding workers to take on a new project when they haven't been able to work on the projects they already have.
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbfLzuoLfjsWhd9SyXl4FgwyibMPsAHGsKc-iG0XC2kAqRxSCkJ_J4lgJ8nMfRSdTUpRskP07sFGWsyi4FcDw1K2bkabwwU_KQQsBr7jXwnop5EukS_yJOM_oBVGeogUsYSn0kXuzemU0/s1600/IMG_1312.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbfLzuoLfjsWhd9SyXl4FgwyibMPsAHGsKc-iG0XC2kAqRxSCkJ_J4lgJ8nMfRSdTUpRskP07sFGWsyi4FcDw1K2bkabwwU_KQQsBr7jXwnop5EukS_yJOM_oBVGeogUsYSn0kXuzemU0/s320/IMG_1312.jpg" /></a></div>
But the surest sign of spring is birds nesting activities. The barn swallows were at it even earlier this season and it's been a constant battle to keep them from building over the door and window ledges on our porch and balcony. Rolled up plastic trash bags, held in place with tape seemed to work for a while until the little buggers figured out that they could pull the bags down and expose the ledges again. A friend told us that she read about using a suspended paper bag to repel wasps and yellowjackets because they mistake it for a hornets nest and she wondered if that might scare the swallows too. Well that's certainly worth a try. Just stuff a couple plastic bags inside of a lunch bag, tie the top with a string and hang it up. So we've had our bags in place for two full weeks now and the swallows haven't made any further progress on their construction project. Let's hope this is the solution.
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEKQMLQhBj8abcJn1owctxa_zn1M2pCyxOXxPBOeo__wHbpMqN0qxou-B2kuTG33szzg5fxbBOFkaMQFVc0OzdexxcSo2LVOIppP78-NXgoPmNRoP7NNpPrAo_dt2LqrW_m2AW8pS94Ek/s1600/IMG_1309.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEKQMLQhBj8abcJn1owctxa_zn1M2pCyxOXxPBOeo__wHbpMqN0qxou-B2kuTG33szzg5fxbBOFkaMQFVc0OzdexxcSo2LVOIppP78-NXgoPmNRoP7NNpPrAo_dt2LqrW_m2AW8pS94Ek/s320/IMG_1309.jpg" /></a></div>
But being able to work outside this morning, I discovered a bird nest in a persimmon tree very close to the house. It was off the ground to right about my eye level so I was able to take a peek and get a photo. Thanks to the magic of the internet, I've identified the eggs as being Mockingbirds, (the state bird of Texas, for all our non-Texan friends).

Mockingbirds, unlike those pesky barn swallows, are welcome here. Why? Because they have the good sense to build a nest in a tree, that looks like a woven work of art like any sensible bird should, instead of building a muddy mess on our house and leaving "calling cards" all over the porch!Painted Views Ranchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10531492969695431637noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725852407276034731.post-50602405944032756242015-05-17T17:54:00.000-07:002015-05-17T17:54:05.511-07:00Joy Filled Times are Coming to Painted Views RanchWe are pleased to announce that we have our first artist signed up to teach a plein air workshop here at Painted Views Ranch.

Why? Well progress here has been in fits and starts, go ahead and then stop.<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFaVrwrrOcBUM3OEJcpjZB3TMrtij56polZuO2jx9f09LaRX3eYa6z7Cqm1cB3JmS5ODlk-7PwyEQEQi8PKEsJiMRXGks4E4G9xFkEfvGi8Rruop5aUQXCHaPxa-L0PguwX7iKM4VY7Fc/s1600/img_pond1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFaVrwrrOcBUM3OEJcpjZB3TMrtij56polZuO2jx9f09LaRX3eYa6z7Cqm1cB3JmS5ODlk-7PwyEQEQi8PKEsJiMRXGks4E4G9xFkEfvGi8Rruop5aUQXCHaPxa-L0PguwX7iKM4VY7Fc/s320/img_pond1.jpg" /></a></div>
The koi pond did get started but has changed significantly from the original design. It's gotten bigger. Not by choice, but because of rocks. As the digging progressed there were several places where the edge of the pond should have been, but huge boulders were found and when they were removed it left gaping holes. So the pond got bigger. In some places the holes were patched with concrete and block, but in other places, well, ... the pond just got re-designed.<BR>
<P>
Then the weather soon threw us the first curveball.
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg57N0Lmb4eYKVnbcHBWDn5qChLN-s-NtIXdxkYCeWHjqbxnlG-pVlm3nD9rDCw6hy2jQ8GmLD5eefI9yxP_ue5fcto7rrWtc894S66kgUFq2YJPiCbazsIj7DKUZhsAN54xkH6M1PDUlI/s1600/pond3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg57N0Lmb4eYKVnbcHBWDn5qChLN-s-NtIXdxkYCeWHjqbxnlG-pVlm3nD9rDCw6hy2jQ8GmLD5eefI9yxP_ue5fcto7rrWtc894S66kgUFq2YJPiCbazsIj7DKUZhsAN54xkH6M1PDUlI/s320/pond3.jpg" /></a></div>
In January and February we had not only some bouts of near freezing temperatures and even some snow, but also some pretty consistent rains, that of course created muddy conditions. That has had a tendency to halt construction as we wait for things to dry out a bit. And just when we think we're ready to move forward again, it would rain again.<BR>
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUlRGLXPFN77K41wiz9TKwVxaIGs6PZWtYs6kiU_QntQi_hvodbSJjqURFBw0id-84NaymkgaJj6gwautVQFyRVE6kBjUDJ9ObjfsvzBNz9ocx4NeZBYi7AvrwcTxYLV8cbUxGFv6nuCI/s1600/IMG_9436.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUlRGLXPFN77K41wiz9TKwVxaIGs6PZWtYs6kiU_QntQi_hvodbSJjqURFBw0id-84NaymkgaJj6gwautVQFyRVE6kBjUDJ9ObjfsvzBNz9ocx4NeZBYi7AvrwcTxYLV8cbUxGFv6nuCI/s320/IMG_9436.JPG" /></a></div>
But in between rains I did manage to get a rainwater collection basin built. It will receive rain water from one of the barn downspouts and three from the house. Every one of the stones that line the basin was carefully selected and placed by hand. After all, what else do I have to spend my time on? <BR>
Now begins the task of selecting the plants that will go into and around it.<BR>
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeYdNqzsDt6dt1dz_Tfm8DIjhEbrWhfII3ZCTyLrLHPQDwA50776j5-j0D-n7bSb0yLHsrztUYiLWiQouES4QQ6xWwAZA4mGhl6pyJC085enWL__qJTnL0gla46I5uJFIuLSmd9Ku5Gb4/s1600/IMG_9440.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeYdNqzsDt6dt1dz_Tfm8DIjhEbrWhfII3ZCTyLrLHPQDwA50776j5-j0D-n7bSb0yLHsrztUYiLWiQouES4QQ6xWwAZA4mGhl6pyJC085enWL__qJTnL0gla46I5uJFIuLSmd9Ku5Gb4/s320/IMG_9440.JPG" /></a></div>
<P><P><P>The rest of the rainwater from the barn will be going into our new 800 gallon storage tank. Having that set up now is probably the best way to assure that we won't get anymore rain for awhile.<BR>
<P>

From the humongous boulders that came out of the pond excavation, we set aside two that have flat surfaces on them and they'll be used as a seating area on top of the berm. You'll be able to sit up there and look down on the entire pond from the side opposite the patio. Here's Rascal, our Ranch Foreman, taking one of them for a test drive.<BR>

<P><P><P>We sat on the patio recently listening to the waterfalls and watching our koi. (We have very good imaginations.) <BR>

We've also had some landscaping done since our last post, but of course the weather put a stop to that too. For as much as four weeks at a time. But we now have a front lawn of bermuda grass and a sprinkler system to keep it watered. The problem is that the digital system that controls the sprinklers hasn't been set up yet so watering the sod is a matter of getting down on your hands and knees in rain gear to open an underground valve, and then run like the wind. Gee, what fun.<BR>
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm7cbVzZB9KR9-kAfAjvsB-PHzhCYh5o-lHIRZ8fxxlPZmihJ2rjPZqDJqYwix1aMNTda3Czv3ThvJYZveppS02CWq-8hOU66yeCTikvmMxL8J6hbGorb00GU7SL7eD2GMSoknh6wA5q0/s1600/IMG_1231.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm7cbVzZB9KR9-kAfAjvsB-PHzhCYh5o-lHIRZ8fxxlPZmihJ2rjPZqDJqYwix1aMNTda3Czv3ThvJYZveppS02CWq-8hOU66yeCTikvmMxL8J6hbGorb00GU7SL7eD2GMSoknh6wA5q0/s320/IMG_1231.JPG" /></a></div>
The front entryway has been constructed. Well, at least the block work is done. When the mailbox is enclosed in block then the stucco crew will come in and finish the masonry. After that, the welder will take measurements for the custom gates and door for the delivery hatch. When will all this happen? Who knows? Yeah, you guessed it. It depends on the weather.<BR>
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJW1swMHRSF-XQC9gvqVRu3b7dSAEWJHFkQPkA0AHeXCFV7RBtXKyABRuTobeehKvdds-Mt-ra2eVNn5aSXbUBvWM3qvaU9LFjaoUExi0f-Bk-m6ZcHTWKwa6AD05OPyyBwwUsCfPEDFY/s1600/wildlife.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJW1swMHRSF-XQC9gvqVRu3b7dSAEWJHFkQPkA0AHeXCFV7RBtXKyABRuTobeehKvdds-Mt-ra2eVNn5aSXbUBvWM3qvaU9LFjaoUExi0f-Bk-m6ZcHTWKwa6AD05OPyyBwwUsCfPEDFY/s320/wildlife.jpg" /></a></div>
The native wildlife we mentioned before continues to show up. The gray fox has become a regular and the persimmon trees in front of kitchen window have been visited in the mornings by flocks of robins alternating between days with hundreds (yes, HUNDREDS) of cedar waxwings. And this past week I thought I'd been hearing the call of wild turkeys, and a few days later there was one hen that strutted across our front lawn, twice in one day. Well, at least I think it was the same hen twice, but maybe it was two hens at different times. Hard to say. They all seem to look alike you know.<BR>

<center>And of course the never ending display of magnificent sunsets continues.<BR> On nights when the sky isn't full of rain clouds that is. <BR>But mornings here in the valley can take your breath away too,<BR>so here's an early morning shot for you to enjoy.<BR> There'll be more sunsets later.<BR></center>Painted Views Ranchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10531492969695431637noreply@blogger.com0
